Deer

To the left is a picture of the first deer that I mounted.

I mounted my her in January, 2002. She was a small doe, given to me by a taxidermist.

I was very excited to mount a deer.. I just couldn't really feel like a taxidermist without mounting a deer, you know? (:

She was mounted on a right-turn doe form from VanDykes, using latex adhesive for a hide/ear paste. And I used ear liners for the ears.

One of the most fun parts was finishing the eyes and nose. I carefully finished the eyes using brown Apoxie Sculpt, oil paints, and some clear gloss to give the eyes a wet looking moisture line on the lower eyelids. The nose was finished by re-creating the nose bumps with "Mod Podge", painting over with oil paint, and spraying a coat of clear gloss. I can't seem to get a good photo of the nose, since the flash bounces off the gloss and makes the nose look weird.

I keep imagining winning an award at the World Taxidermy Competitions... I have a long way to go, but I can still dream!

Here are deer that I mounted afterwards:

Pronghorn Antelope

The third shoulder mount that I did was a pronghorn antelope buck. Dave Toms of MT sent me the cape and Kerry Zerr of ND sent me the horns (thanks Dave and Kerry!!)

I mounted it on an upright, right turn McKenzie "Sweep" form. This mount turned out the best of all! I'm quite proud of it.
