AMY, THIS IS YOUR VERY VERY PROUD GRANDMOTHER. I JUST FINISHED READING ABOUT 60 OF YOUR COMMENTS IN YOUR GUEST BOOK. I ONLY WISHED EVERYONE COULD KNOW WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL YOUNG GIRL YOU ARE. THEY WOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS JUST ONE THING IN A VERY LONG STRING OF THINGS THAT YOU NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE US WITH. WE (YOUR FAMILY) HAVE HAD THE BENEFIT OF SEEING HOW ADVANCED AND INTELLIGENT YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FOR SO LONG THAT WE SOMETIMES FORGET JUST HOW SMART YOU ARE. I FOR ONE AM NEVER SURPRISED,..,.JUST PROUD. BUT THEN I WAS VERY PROUD OF HOW SMART YOUR MOM WAS ALSO. TELL SARA I AM JUST AS PROUD OF HER. NEXT YEAR SHE WILL TAKE THE GOLD AT THE 4-H COMPETITION TOO. LOVE AND KISSES TO YOU BOTH. KEEP OF THE GOOD WORK!

Hi, I just read John Kelso's article about you in the Austin American Statesman. I am a middle school teacher and I think what you are doing is FANTASTIC! It really neat that you have truly taken the time to learn a trade. I really do like the rat family, cute! I just wanted to drop you a note to say hi and to send on my encouragement to you for learning and experiencing life at a young age. Also if you wrote the text on your webpage more kudo's for your writing. One more high five goes to your parents for letting you explore such an interesting topic. You go girl!!!!! Maureen

Amy, I saw Kelso's article this morning and thought it must be a gag . . . but your website is fascinating. I'm sorry that you got all those nasty mean messages . . . sometimes people don't think about things carefully before they react to them. I can't imagine how they can do that after seeing your site. You seem like a nice girl and you are obviously devoted to your hobby . . . you also write very well for someone your age. Anyway, keep up the good work . . . anyone skilled enough to skin a chicken at 14 might go on to be a veterinary researcher or even a people surgeon one day. -- Blake Smith, Austin TX.

Hey Amy, What an interesting and artistic hobby you have, AND a great website too. Keep up the good work doing what you love. Who knows? Some day you might become the chief taxidermist for a major natural history museum. Also checked out your carnivorous plant page. Ya know, when I was 14 I used to try to grow those fascinating plants too in a terrarium, but they did'nt live too long, just for a season. Anyway, good luck with your hobby and liked your website. Amy, congrats on your hobby! I saw John Kelso's article, and I was delighted to see it. I have done taxidermy since high school. In fact, I even got college credit for doing a special project on taxidermy. It is definitely an artistic endeavor, and it takes hard work, incredible patience, and an artistic eye to mount a creature in a lifelike pose. Keep going with it! Don't let any comments by folks who are ignorant get you down. It's a beautiful, ancient form of sculpture, in my humble opinion!

Good for you! You are a bright young lady. Sorry to read in Austin American Statesman you have received hate mail when you should be complimented. I am past seventy. When I was in second grade in Houston,Texas, I had a wonderful teacher. She mentioned that our Indian project would include learning how to tan hides but, since she couldn't get actual hides, we would have to use paper sacks. I asked my Dad to provide enough squirrel hides for every child to have one to tan. It was very educational and the kids loved it. He provided that teacher with hides every year thereafter until she retired. There are many adults with an appreciation of Indians, pioneers, and the utilization of nature's bounty due to that teacher and the hides. The hides came from a hunting club belonging to a very large lumber company and was located on its land. The squirrels were eaten. The rule there is either eat the game you kill or give it to someone who will. Many of us gave excess to food banks and, prior to their establishment, found persons in need directly. By the way, that lumber company has won numerious awards for its conservation activities. Your work is also conservation. It would have been a shame for your beautiful pelts to have been left to rot. When you win the state competition next month, please be sure to post the news on your website as I'm sure I'm not the only fan who will want to know.

You will find that most of the people who criticize you , don't have the ability to do something unique like you. Just remember that this is America and you can do what you want. I think Taxidermy is Awesome. I don't have any interest in doing it myself (kind of a cupcake) but I love to see a good mount as much as the next guy. I enjoyed your page. I am an art teacher at a private school here in SC and I have lots of skulls and mounts in my class room. I have collected some for myself and several have been donated. I even had a professional taxidermist mount an armadillo for me. I love my armadillo I also have an african wart hog mount that is so ugly it is beautiful, kind of full circle. I have skinned snakes since I was your age and like you, rely on road kill since I prefer not to kill any animals unless I am going to eat them. I found your page tonight on two different web pages that have reference links on them for strange sites on the web, but I don't think yours is strange and I really enjoyed it. Hey Amy! I found your site via memepool.com! Great job on the taxidermy & skinning, I NEVER had a chance to mess around with projects like that when I was your age (Mom would have had a cow!) How cool that you've got so many neat pets, too. I'd like to have some goats someday (nigerian dwarfs). Right now I've got a retired racing greyhound, 3 cats, a cornsnake, & a ball python. The snakes are babies, I just got interested in snakes this year. I was SO happy when the ball python finally ate a mouse for me! Now she's getting fat! I love my animals. I'm an artist, & it's also really useful to be able to study them for drawing reference. Especially the greyhound, I can see most all his bones, tendons, & muscles! I thought you might be interested in this other site: it's about skeleton articulation, teaches how to clean animal bones & then preserve & mount the skeleton. I haven't tried it yet cause 1) there's not much roadkill here in L.A.! & 2) I don't have anywhere to put a carcass to get cleaned by bugs without horrifying the neighbors in my apartment building OR having it get carried off by the coyotes around here! Anyway here's that site: http://www-adm.pdx.edu/user/bio/articula/home.html Keep having fun, --Kim

the skins on your site pictures are lovely! And you have done a good job on the rats - I have seen profesionally stuffed animals that did not look as good. I don't know anything about taxidermy. Amy: I loved your page. Thanks. Last year, my neighbors shot a four foot rattle snake on their property, because they have dogs. They weren't going to keep it, so I asked if I could have it. I carried the snake home while it was still writhing and rattling. I went on-line, found a rattle snake site and skinned and ate the snake. I cut the snake into pieces, marinated it and barbecued it. There wasn't much meat on the bones, and it was pretty rubbery, but I hated to waste the poor snake. I cut the head off and either a cat or a raccoon ran off with it. I treated the skin with anti-freeze for about month and then mounted it on a piece of wood. It looks beautiful. Elizabeth

Your site is very interesting. Although I find skinning and taxidermy a little weird, I think it's cool that you follow your interests instead of the crowd. However, Christian rock is another matter... Anyway, you're going to get a lot of traffic because your site is posted on memepool. Ignore the narrow-minded people who will inevitably post here.

Amy: Just a warning - like the other one below. Your site was chosen as cruel site of the day by www.cruel.com. This will no doubt drive site traffic way up - and fill up your guest book with entries from a whole realm of people. Obviously not all of them are going to be nice - as your hobby is a rather unique and interesting one. Don't let them get to you!

I just wanted to let you know that I thought it was very responsible of you to put a warning at the top of your page. So don't let any one criticize you for what you enjoy. As long as your not killing the animals, and your just useing pre-dead ones, your not doing anything wrong.Awsome.

I think that it's wonderful to see a young woman take up taxidery as a hobby. Taxidermy has kept me sane for years now, ever since my mom died. We don't get many guests since they put in the new highway off-ramp. Would you like a sandwich?

Just wanted to warn you that your page is starting to get picked up by web logs, so you're going to have a lot of messed up entries in your guest book. Don't take it too seriously, and its good that you have such an interesting hobby.

I like to skin hot dogs and sausages. Would it be possible for you to add some tips regarding the skinning of hot dogs. Also, I want to taxidermy a large German sausage, but have eaten the head, is it possible to recover the head? I want to skin them without hurting them. Thank-you.

Amy, I offer you my warmest prayers and best wishes. I think taxidermy and skinning are very interesting hobbies, and I think it's sweet that you don't kill animals but use roadkill. That's compassionate! I think you're sight is very interesting, and its amazing that you're 14! You have a career in graphic arts ahead of you, I can tell! You know the computer real good. I also think your dad's site is good, I can't believe he has to get up so early! and has many jobbs. so "good luck" to you, and watch out what you pick up on the side of the road! you know, in case any weirdos dump their victims or whatever.
