I enjoyed your website very much and there is nothing wrong with Taxidermy! The Museum of Natural History is FULL of cool displays in NY, if you ever get the chance you should go.
There was a time we all had to skin things in order to eat. I think its great your parents support you and don't listen to any criticism. I have two cats and have considered skinning them to remember them when there gone. They have beautiful fur and I think it would be cool to always have them around. Too bad you live so far away or I'd pay you to do it!
Good luck with your hobby!

AWESOME website Amy! I have been doing taxidermy part time for 25 years with my husband, and started my own business just 6 years ago. I still get people that don't understand why a female wants to do this kind of work, but my love of wildlife doesn't stop when the animal is dead. I was an art major in college, but banking was my career. Now I have a way of expressing my artistic talent. I would love to help you with anything you might need in the way of advise or encouragement. I mount about 100 things a year; deer, bear, fish, ducks, geese, turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, etc. You appear to have the guts and the talent to do very well, as have most of the women who choose this as a profession. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Your site is neat; there is certainly a need for taxidermy, and the "finished product" is beautiful. Absolutely nothing offensive about your site, nor do I see anything at all strange about your interest in creating "A R T".

Great site Amy! I had a mink that was killing my chickens. Very nasty critter with bloodlust. We trapped it with a Havahart, but had to kill it because anywhere we took it would endanger other folks' chickens. I wanted to skin it but did not know how. Trapper/skinning sites prepared me to avoid the anal sacs, but your site was the best to understand hands-on-skinning. I think I did a good job (with an Exacto knife!) The mink skin will hang in the barn near the chickens as a reminder for me to be vigilant about predators. Thank you Amy and good luck in life.

Congratulations on your website and hobby! I have enjoyed taxidermy for 22 years. I went through 2 major cancer surgeries 7 years ago and could not do my former profession (hardwood flooring). I turned to taxidermy and have had a lot of fun. You seem to be a very ambitious young lady with parents that don't take away your artistic talent. We have also homeschooled our 2 kids (20 and 18 yr old). I wish you the best in the future and if you eveer need any advise, feel free to contact me. Keep up the GREAT Work!

You go, Girl! I love to see people living their dreams! Yours is a noble profession...giving those beings that were once living another chance to 'live' on for posterity's sake. What you do does make them come alive again, if you are good at your craft, and I've no doubt that you are very good and make yourself get better with each animal. I think it is very cool that you already know what you want to do in life. Who knows where this will lead you? Best wishes for excellent experiences in your future.

Well, interesting hobby I must say. I do not agree with the cat skinning, but I do not have the right to judge you. I listened to your radio interview, and you sounded like you have wonderful manners, and I read your entire website, and your grammar is excellent.
You are also a good webdesigner, and I feel from what I have seen and read about you, is that is your future. But it's your life so enjoy it.
Basically I wanted you to know that I own 2 cats, and they are like children to me, but I understand your viewpoint, and as long as you use roadkill/other reason/ dead cats, I see nothing wrong with it. I just hope you never get a cat and kill it on purpose to do your hobby. That would be pretty crummy. 8(
Oh well, I said my mind!
Thanks for your time!

Amy. This is a wonderful site! I am very proud of you for being so determined to be the best at whatever you do. Looks like you have been very busy. I like the little shop that Ned fixed up for you. Being a taxidermist could be good preparation to becoming a veterinarian. You know, there is a segment of the pet owner population that would like to preserve their own pets after they die. I've heard of companies freeze drying pets but haven't seen them promoting their services lately. Could be another niche business opportunity for you. Keep up the great work. Your best Uncle (GC)

I'm 15 and homeschooled too! Drop me a line if you wanna talk. I know what it's like to have an unusual hobbie. I raise and show sheep. It's not as unusual as yours, but plently of people think i'm wierd enough for doing it. I also know what it's like to get flames from the animal rights groups (i get that every time i go to a sheep show) Ok, i've taken up enough room in your GB. Later!

Cool. Ya' know, I don't know that many people who are into this profession. I think it's because of the big "death taboo" in our country. Many people are raised to view death as sad, scary, and to be avoided at all costs, which leads to those same feelings about things that are dead. It's neat to see people break the mold, be brave, be different. You go girl! :)

I think that you are doing a wonderful work with animals and really show the beuty of nature. Although I don't think I could kill or skin a animal I do enjoy stuffed animals, especially when they are nicelly preserved.

We have a LIFE unlike the people that are trying to put down kids, and taxidermists! A life we enjoy. We preserve, and you try to take it away. I am with Amy 100%, And you cant make everyone scared and mad. You can try, but when you look at it in the real world your wrong! We're right! TAXIDERMY FOR EVER!!! And Amy dont give up, and dont let people try to discourage you! You and I, plus half the world thinks the same as you ad me. Dont listen to people tha try tomake use look bad. Thye have no life! Amy,
I was enjoying your site greatly when I came to your personal information page. When I found out that you are 15, I was FLOORED! You are an awesome young lady! I have 3 boys that my wife and I homeschool and I can only pray that they will become as gifted as you in their adolescent years. I wanted to ask you if you've ever researched primitive tanning methods used by Native Americans. I once read that they used the animal's brains and fat as a tanning medium. Have you ever considered using such methods? Keep up the good work and love of nature. You are an asset to the world!

I was looking for opinions on the best way to tan deer hide when I came upon your website. I AM SO IMPRESSED!!! Your work is fantastic!!! I commend you on your positive self image and your obvious belief in yourself. You display great talent for your hobby, although in your case hobby may not be as appropriate as "craft". You possess great skill and exhibit an appreciation for nature and art that is absolutely incredible. I am showing all of my friends your site. I also want to thank you for sharing your techniques and the names of the supplies you use. I tried brain tanning last year and this year I am going to try chemical methods. Your input has been invaluable as to what I am going to use. Okay, I guess I shouldn't keep typing over and over how wonderful you are and just say THANKS!

I just wanted to tell you that your work looks great! Keep up the good work, and beleive it or not, posting information on a website like this is really fantastic....because it allows people like me, far away from you, to get a glimse of your work, and your area of the country.
Everyone should consider publishing information on their interests online......you have done a good thing. Keep it up.
Thanks,

(taxidermy is going to be more of a hobbie than job) Anyway, you do such neat work and I hope that you do become a full time taxidermist!!!!!

Personally, I can't stand the sight of what my husband does with taxidermy, but he loves doing it. I admire your standing up for what you really want to do, as I am sure there are a lot of people against it. Congratulations on the award that I read about in the Greenhouse report. Keep on believing in yourself and I am sure you will succeed far in life. S. Renigar

Hi Amy,
I have been browsing taxidermy net for about 2 years now, which is how long I have been doing taxidermy myself. As a matter of fact, after all this time I posted my first question on the board last night! I have seen several posts by you or posts others have made concerning you, and it has been interesting to see you come along in your work.
I really enjoyed looking at your website. You do a good job with the site and with mounting animals. I am like you in that I mainly like deer heads and mammals. You can see a couple of the first deer heads I ever did on my website along with a big bobcat I did last spring. I have just gotten my license and am going into business. I got my first job the other day. While at Wal-Mart putting out some
business cards the manager of the sporting goods section asked me to do a button buck which is her first deer harvest ever. Of course I was delighted and felt mighty blessed to get it. If she likes it that should generate a lot of business. Taxidermy is a fascinating hobby. Keep up the good work!

I was looking into some info on taxidermy because my youngest daughter was thinking of becoming one. While it may be a task she will never surmount, I was very impressed when I read your website. Lauren, my daughter, is 19 and has never had a problem with helping her brother skin and gut the deer he has shot. So, she "might" be able to handle this particular job. You can and obviously relish the work that it involves Amy!
Anyway, I ramble on.......I was simply wondering if you have ever done any work on mounting any reptiles? I have a pet Iguana in my freezer that measures about 3-4 feet long and he is in perfect condition. I would LOVE to have him done but I can't find anyone that does reptiles. And HOW much would it cost? Can you do such a thing, or do you know someone who does them? I loved this Iguana and would like to see him done right.
Please let me know if you can help me out in some way Amy and meanwhile - KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!!
Linda

just to say hi and hope you the best of luck in your new adventure. It's nice to know that there are young ladys
like you taking an interest in the great outdoors. In my
opinion you are on the right track to make some good money.
I started hunting small game when i was 12 years old and got
into big game hunting when i was 26 years old. I been doing it for the last 32 years and enjoy it very much. Young people
of today will be the ones who will be left to be the caretakers of the great outdoors and battle with the beaucrats to keep their rights to hunt, fish, and taxidermy.
If you are not a member of the NRA i urge you to join now.
Keep up the good work and who knows, before i have to give u[
hunting, i just might get that trophy i have been looking for
all these years and need a good taxidermist.

Just to say hi and let you know how proud i am of you for making the choice to become a taxidermist. I know your mom
and dad are very proud of you. It is a rare thing to find a
16 year old as level headed and focus as you seem to be.
Wish i could say the same for my children. I started hunting
when i was 26 years old and been doing it for 32 years. I have skinned many animals since then. I hope you the best of
luck in the future and remember the more experience you gain
the better taxidermist you will be. It's nice to know that
there are young ladys like you taking an interest in the great outdoors. Best of luck in your new adventure and if
you are not a member please join the NRA.

You missed another Great Woman taxidermist out of Michigan. "Jean Roll" I have had the honor of being friends with her and meeting her close friend Jan VanHoesen both are well known judges. I have learned so much from Jean Roll over the years. She is a very giving person who is always willing to offer suggestions when doing taxidermy. I am always amazed at her tenacity in creating the most lifelike mounts with the most natural expressions. Taxidermy like so many other fields have nothing to do with race or gender. At your age there is no telling how far your dreams can take you. Keep up the good work. If you ever need assistance or have questions with small mammal taxidermy or game heads I am sure Jean Roll would love to talk with you. If you look in the Noonkester catalog you will see Jean is also a sculptor like Jan. Both Jean and Jan are without question two of the most approachable people you would ever like to meet. Take care Steve Martin.

I just wanted to tell you that your website and your knowledge of taxidermy is outstanding. I was surfing the web looking for info on, "how to do taxidermy." Your parents have done a wonderful job schooling you and your siblings as well,I'm sure. My wife Lisa and I have a new baby girl Miranda(9 months old),who I hope turns out to be a self motivated individual as yourself. I am not usually one who signs anyones guestbook. However, I felt compelled to do so, because I was so impressed with your website. Your folks and you yourself Amy, should be very proud of the taxidermist and more importantly the individual you have turned out to be.
Keep up the wonderful work and I will send you a photo of my first project once it is completed.

Great site. Very informative and well-constructed. It's obvious that Amy has a bright future in her hobby...if only all of us could be so lucky!
It's silly for people to think this is a strange occupation for a female. There was a time (not too long ago, and still applicable in much of the world) when the very existence of humans often relied on getting the most out of an animal's earthly remains. It would probably shock the average woman to learn that the majority of the more "icky" tasks of utilizing the animal--whether for meat, skins, or anything in between--was most likely carried out by their rather recent female ancestors. These activities were not considered disgusting or un-ladylike, but were a necessity of life, and women both young and old played an important part in them.
Sorry...I started rambling there. Amy, best of luck to you. Also, applause for your parents for raising one so determined, literate and talented. Home schooling (four children?? whew!) is far from easy, but your teachers seem to be doing a great job.

Amy, Congratulations on your recent entry at the world's. My husband and I first saw you at the National's in Columbia. Then he pointed you out at the world's. I think its great how fast you are moving up. I envy you. I have always loved animals and anything to do with them. My first project was a roadkill squirrel. Then I was hooked. But I am a mom and I work full time in a factory so I am not able to do what I love full time. I am 35 years old and wish I could have started doing this years ago. I too find that people don't expect a girl to do this sort of work. At the conventions and eveywhere else, people instantly start talking to my husband. He is very quick to point out that I am the taxidermist. He has been my support in getting started with my new career. I went to school with Joe Meder last year. He has his deer in his backyard. I loved the week that I spent there. He is a great teacher. You keep up with what you are doing. I know you are going on to bigger and better things! Best wishes to you! Someday I'll try to stop and introduce myself. You are always so busy when I see you.

I was wondering what all of the "to-do" was about with this up and coming young taxidermist. Seems that everyone is talking about you and your work Amy! After visiting your web site I can see why. I was impressed with your tiger, and glad to see that you are competing at the WTC! I haven't tried the competitions yet myself, but plan to very soon. We don't have a taxidermy association here in Washington but I may venture down to Oregon in June. This is my 4th year doing taxidermy and I mount mostly Mule deer and blacktail deer but I have also mounted elk, caribou, several blackbear life-size & rugs, raccoon, coyote, beaver, and I have an otter to do here soon. I only do this part time but someday (when I retire from my real job) I hope do this full time. As a new comer, I am in awe of what you have accomplished in such a short time, you are an inspiration for many taxidermists new and old. I'm not sure you are even aware of the influence you have had in this genre. Best of luck to you!

Amy-
Wow! What an incredibly informative website. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to visit. It is wonderful that you have seized the opportunity to follow your heart and do something that you love. What is important is that you are true to yourself, and don't follow what is considered the "norm." Where would we be today if everyone was a follower and not a leader? I am proud to say that I know you!
Congratulations on your many achievements, especially the world championships. The tiger looks so much better after you prepared him than he did in the before picture. I am anxious to hear how the competition turns out.

I admire your choice of hobbies. It is true that you are singled out as being "strange" for being a girl who enjoys something other than playing with clothes and makeup, etc. Being a girl who deals in a bone lab with a bunch of boys always waiting for me to be the one who gets grossed out first, I salute you for not letting other's negative opinions make a dent on your enthusiasm for your hobby. I also commend your smarts for turning a hobby into a lucrative one. You seem an enterprising and promising young woman. Kudos!

Some thoughts....When I was in my teen age years I spent all my free time learning to trap and handle all sorts of furbearing animals. It was and remains a great interest of mine (I am 53 years old) I learned a lot about nature and it helped me develop a great deal of manual dexterity when it came time to skin the critters and process the pelts. Your work shows tremendous patience, a fine touch, and an artistic flair. You seemed to have many side talents as well. When I was reading your journal to try to pick up some pointers on how to do things (which I did gleam some useful info) I read something about your mother stating that you should consider becoming a surgeon. I do not know if that something that appeals to you or not, but it should be seriously considered. We need people with your talents especially in the re-constructive plastic surgery field. Persons with serious physical defects from birth defects to traumatic injuries, need rebuilt to improve their years on this Earth. I am a practicing OB-GYN physician, most people who have seen me operate believe that I have gifted hands. What gifts I do have I believe were developed from my early trapping related experiences. I do not have your artistic flair, so I believe I picked the correct medical speciality for myself. Being a physician would not require you to give up taxidermy completely. I mounted a raccoon just last weekend. I was pleased with how it turned out, but I suspect that you would have done a better job. At any rate, don't be afraid to develop completely all the gifts that you have been given. Best wishes for your continued success......Bill

Amy, I think your website is very outstanding & neat. I admire your work. As when I was little I was not able to do the things you do now. I used to help my father with Taxidermy work before he passed away. I am thinking about getting back into it. Your work is much better than most folks at here that has been doing Taxidermy for many years. I am inpressed with your tiger cub. It looks great! Congratlations on your award. I wish you the best of luck in the future. I do know when my cat dies. I will be calling you to mount it for me. Your parents are wonderful to help you with your work. Enjoy them while you can. Take care & may God bless you & your family.

I was smiling as I viewed your web site and your work. My daughter used to sit beside me for hours and help or watch me when she was younger. At the age of 12, she did her first rooster pheasant from start to finish. As she got older, her interest faded but I still have great memories of her helping. I know she is proud of her earlier interest in taxidermy. She is off at college now and we don't see much of here anymore. Keep ut the good work, your mounts are beautiful!

I was really impressed with your website and work. I am currently a sophmore at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and unfortunately, a devoted fisherman and hunter. Now that season is back, I have started to blow off parties and late nights just to hit the woods the next morning. Anyways, I am glad I found your site and will keep you in mind if I want to get a mount done. Congrats on all your success!

Congrats on your awards, and much luck in the future.
There is a great deal of work in your business. A GOOD taxidermist is hard to come by. Like much anything you start as a kid, you become better the longer you are at it!
Don't worry about what other people say about what you should be doing....Do what you like, and what makes you happy. You are apparently good a animal work , so stick with it! Happy New year!

Amy I found the guestbook! I just wanted you leave you a note in this book now that I found it. You are an awsome taxidermist. I am so pleased with my bobcat and I can not wait to get it home. I am glad that you put the time into it that you did. I know I can be picky and hard to deal with at times, but thanks for putting up with me. I am looking forward to many many years of doing business with you. I am really blessed to be able to call you such a close friend. God has given you a great talent and I wish nothing but the best for you and we have a lot of great times ahead. God bless you and there will always be a log on my campfire for you . p.s your still not skinning my BUFFALO!

I really enjoyed the article on you and your business in American Hunter, and I also enjoyed browsing through your web site. You are a very talented young lady, and your parents can justifiably be very proud of you. AFter reading about your new .22 rifle, and your concern about the size of the hole that is produced with hollow point .22's, I'd like to make a suggestion. You may want to look into getting a Rossi Gallery model pump action .22. With it, you can fire >22 long rifle, .22 long, and .22 shorts. I have a Winchester Model 62A, which is the gun the Rossi was based on, and it has served me well for years, taking more squirrels and rabbits than I can count, using .22 shorts. Very cheap to shoot, and very minimal tissue and hide damage.
Keep up the good work, Amy. I would think that you have a very bright future ahead of you.

I think your work is amazing. Ever since reading about you in an NRA magazine, I have had an interest in mounting animals. I sort of had a little puppy love for it, but now I really want to start taxiderming. If you have any suggestions for me, like what books to get or any personal preferences on how to mount something, please tell me. And I really like the fox pedestal.

I think it is pretty cool that you have been able to achieve so much at 17 years old. I got into taxidermy when I was 15, there was a class at my high school and it was something that I wanted to learn. And now I am addicted, it is a very rewarding art. I am 20 years old now and I also have pretty big goals that I would like to accomplish in the taxidermy field. give me a shout back sometime.

I wish I had heard of you 3 years ago, when our beloved cat passed away. I would have loved to have him in his natural way, even if he were not alive.
I am also very glad to see a young women not afraid to do this type of work, and have a promising career ahead of her already. You can be both a surgeron and taxidermist. Your live patients would love it! No I am not strange eithter - just practical. I have a 4 year granddaughter who at 24 months old was already hunting and carrying in the squirrals with her Daddy and Mommy. She can even shoot a shotgun (with Dad's help of course).
So...Good Luck!

Now after graduating high school I'm looking into going to a taxidermy school to further my knowledge and start a succesfull taxidermy bussiness. I just couldn't see myself doing any thing else for a living, I love doing taxidermy, its a great way to stay close to hunting and fishing, which is what I love to do most. -Sarah-

Great website. Wish I had more time to do dedicated taxidermy work these days but my time is in high demand, especially with the war. I managed to do about a dozen ducks and a handful of quail this year just to keep my skills honed. I enjoyed your "how to tan" article. Thanks and keep up the good work.

it is not wierd for a girl to get into this wonderfull art work. my friend has been teaching me the ropes of taxidermy when we have the time. i havent tried it yet an he said the first animal that i should do is a squrrel because they are easy to do is that true? how do you split the tails? i hope that some day that my daughter gets into the taxidermy bit she helps me now skinning animals that i hunt she is only 5 yrs old an gose hunting with her daddy i enjoy teaching her about nature an tell her that there is more to it than killing an animal. to enjoy thier beauty. i take her out to get pictures of fawns when they are born. you do great work it is an art to do what you do with animals an keep up the good work hopefully you will get a deer this fall but dont get discurage if you dont they can be hard to hunt. how do you know which chemicles to choose from there are so many different ones out there. an when you dont have the money to get the tools that you need how did you start? as far as the skinning board i can make one of those on my own. my friend has all the tools he needs he makes good money doing it but im geting into it for the hobby an not for the money i want to get into doing birds an fish. i got a turkey this spring anhad him do my turkey fan an the beard an legs for me. if i get a nice tom this fall i want a hole turkey mount done but he dosent do birds any more so its something that im going to try on my own. an i thought my daughter was going to be the only girl to get into taxidermy its great to see other girls into it i bet it makes your dad so happy to see his girls to take an interest into something that he likes. im very proud that my little girl is taking the interest in hunting an fishing with me she is my world my 10 yr old step daughter is got into the same interest with me. but my 2 older step kids didnt but that is their choice an its not good to force kids into some thing that they dont want to do.an i support them on their choices. Cool! I don't hunt because I am afraid of guns but am interested in taxidermy. I think it is cool to salvage roadcasualties and make use of their pelts/bones/etc. I am impressed.

Your mounts look GREAT! Keep up the good work. I was very amazed to see someone your age so interested in taxidermy. You'll be learning new things day by day.
